Steps Back In Time

Epilogue

Jack parked his pickup in the driveway. "Well, both cars are here."

"They could just be asleep." Sam sounded doubtful as she waited for Teal'c to hop out of the passenger side. "None of us have gotten much of that in the last few days."

"It is unlikely Daniel Jackson would have slept through the numerous phone calls and pages we have sent." Teal’c was scanning the front yard for any signs of foul play.

They had been trying for over an hour to contact the newlyweds when they hadn’t turned up for their shift that morning. Hammond had sent them all home when after seventy hours of leading the investigation into the foothold, Sam had made a startling and depressing discovery. The feedback loop of the security cameras and the switched off CO2 scrubbers had been controlled by a simple computer virus on a time delay. She was still working on where and when the program had been embedded in the system but the knowledge had ballooned their suspect list to include every person in the SGC. It became apparent that the investigation was going to take a lot longer than they first thought (and hoped), and the general had ‘ordered’ them to take at least a twelve hour break off base before resuming the largest investigation the SGC had ever conducted. They had managed to eliminate a few personnel from the list. Two SG teams had been off world since before Daniel and Annika had found the instruction manual, and another had been on leave. Besides those twelve people, only another three had officially been scratched from the list. Daniel, Annika and Sergeant Siler. They were the only people who knew the location of the device at the time.

The three of them marched up the garden path. Sam veered off to do a scout around the back. There was no evidence of the festive decorations that had graced their teammates’ house three days ago. They presumed under Joyce’s supervision the party hire company had removed the fake flooring, rustic wooden tables and suits of armor.

Jack rang the doorbell and rapped on the door. "Daniel? Annika? You home?"

Sam jogged around the corner. "Back door’s locked up."

The colonel hammered on the door again with the same silent results.

They exchanged looks, wordlessly communicating their options.

Jack shrugged. "Okay, T, break it down."

With a nod the Jaffa braced himself, then using his shoulder slammed into the wooden paneling, splintering the door from its hinges with one hard shove. With nine mils drawn the military officers entered the house, clearing the lounge before moving on to the kitchen and study.

Jack motioned for them to move to the next floor and the team crept up the stairs, dreading both what they would and wouldn’t find.

The spare bedroom was undisturbed and with baited breath Sam twisted the knob of the main bedroom. The door swung open to reveal the carpet scattered with the clothes Daniel and Annika had worn from the base the night before. The new husband and wife were tucked cozily in their bed, and for all intents and purposes looked sound asleep.

Three loud heaves of relief were expelled as they saw the steady rise and fall of their chests.

"Hey, sleepyheads!" Jack strode to the bed end. "Wake up!" He reached out to give Daniel’s foot peeking out from beneath the blankets a shake.

"Sir, wait!" Sam’s warning came a second too late.

He gave a yelp of surprise when his hand collided with an invisible barrier, causing a flash of violet to spark around the couple. "Dammit, Casper, I’m not the enemy," he grumbled, flexing his fingers to rid himself of the pins and needles sensation.

"O’Neill, observe the positioning of Daniel and Annika Jackson."

Daniel was lying on his back with one arm encircling his wife nestled to his side. Annika had her arm draped over the top of his chest, forearm bent upwards so the side of his face was snuggled against her skin. The palm of her hand rested against the middle of his forehead.

"Oy. Incoming." Jack contemplated using the phone on the bedside table, then decided he didn’t want to risk getting zapped by Annika’s protective shield again for being too close. Instead he fished out his cell phone from his pocket and hit the speed dial.

The general picked up after the first ring. "Hammond."

"Hello, sir," Jack said brightly. "Well, they’re here, sleeping like babies. Seems that Casper’s sharing a hocus pocus dream with her husband and doesn’t want to be disturbed."

Hammond took a moment to decipher what his 2IC had reported. He ignored the irreverent tone, knowing it was mostly caused by Jack’s relief at finding his civilian team members unharmed. "Understood. Any indication of when they’ll wake up?"

"None whatsoever, sir." He paused, his gaze only now catching the distinctive moist trails down his sleeping friends’ cheeks. "But whatever it is they are witnessing it is not a premonition of their honeymoon."

"I want you to remain there until they wake and then bring them back to debrief." Hammond pushed aside the absurdity of that order. Only in his line of work would a debrief of a dream be considered a normal occurrence.

"Will do, sir." Jack disconnected the call. "Sam, why don’t you start a pot of coffee. Both of them lose track of time when awake, no reason to think they’ll be any different asleep."

The major nodded, a grin tilting her lips, and headed downstairs.

"I shall attempt to repair the front door," Teal’c decided. "Perhaps considering this variation of Annika Jackson’s abilities, we should obtain a copy of the Jacksons' house key."

"Good id-" the colonel broke off with a slight frown. He examined his key ring, singling out one particular key. "Crap! Already have one."

By the time the coffee had brewed, Teal’c had jerry rigged the door so that it would at least close. Sam passed around the mugs and they settled around the room waiting for their teammates to wake.

"Major Carter, did Doctor Fraiser identify the residue in the pressure tube?" Teal’c asked, folding his large frame into the cross-legged position he used for meditating. Before the alarm had been raised regarding the missing Jacksons, they’d been about to receive an update on a second piece of the foothold puzzle. He saw no reason why the meeting couldn’t continue where they were.

Sam gave a nod, taking a sip of caffeine. "As we suspected, it was a sedative from the standard med kits for off-world. So was the injector."

The mystery of why the techs in the control room hadn’t sounded the alarm nor closed the iris, had been solved by the discovery of an air pressure injection beneath the back console rigged with a time delay switch. Normally the tool was pressed against the skin, the power of the pump forcing the chosen medication into the blood stream without leaving puncture marks. When not depressed against a body part, the medication sprayed out like a mist. One of the primary reasons this particular sedative was standard issue was because it was just as effective when inhaled as injected. It had taken only a few seconds for the techs to be knocked out when they had breathed it in.

"Peachy. So, no way to trace that either," Jack scowled. With the number of packs that had been lost from being forced to be left behind off-world, it would be impossible to track one vial to a particular team, let alone a specific person. "Is anything going to go our way?"

They became involved in a discussion on what their next move would be. With the ideas being flown back and forth between them, they missed the first stirrings of the couple on the bed.

Blue and violet eyes sprang open at the same time, their gazes slightly wild at what they had been through. Hearts thumping, they visually confirmed that the other was truly there, alive and uninjured. Daniel straight away gave a firm tug of their bond, needing the guarantee that it was still intact. Annika’s hands scrambled over his chest, running over his smooth skin making sure there was no evidence of a new bullet wound. Long fingers traveled down over her hip and she shifted her leg over his proving that her vision injury was non-existent.

"Don’t you ever even think about doing that," his voice was ragged, almost harsh, filled with the grief and pain that had been predominant in his mind for the last few hours.

"I won’t be responsible for you death, not if I can help it," she croaked, her own emotions threatening to spill over.

"You’ve already thought about it?" A look of horror crossed his features.

"No…Yes…the dream made me think about it," Annika stumbled over the words. "I can’t unlearn what I know now. It showed me how-"

"Then you give me the choice," Daniel insisted.

"But-"

"No buts. And you’ll abide by my decision."

For a moment they glared at each other, reading the mutual raw torment of the visionary dream, the stubbornness of their individual convictions of what Daniel was demanding.

Annika reluctantly backed down. She may have been the one to create their life bond, but she realized the decision to break it should have at the very least been a joint agreement. "I’ll give you the choice."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

She cupped his face in her hands, and his arms tightened around her crushing her to him. Their lips met in a desperate kiss, trying to banish the premonition with the physical touch of one another. Their love being bounced back and forth through their bond melted the tension and anguish that had been so very real in their minds.

The sound of a throat clearing gave them the first inkling that they weren’t alone.

"Good morning, Sleeping Beauties."

Jack’s drawl penetrated their ears. They sprang apart into a sitting position to see Jack, Sam and Teal’c lounging around their room with cups of coffee in heir hands like it was the most normal thing in the world.

"Uh...good morning." Daniel reached over for his glasses with a befuddled frown.

"Make yourself at home, why don’t you." Annika clutched the sheet around her body, making sure that her nakedness was covered up.

"Thanks, we did." Jack took a swig of coffee. "Have a nice dream?"

The couple exchanged haunted glances.

"Nightmare actually." Daniel kept his arm possessively wrapped around his wife’s waist.

"A preventable nightmare?" Sam asked from her place on the floor. From the way her friends were clinging to each other it was clear that the vision had shaken them both up.

"It damned well, better be," Annika growled.

A mischievous grin twisted Daniel’s lips. Now that he was positive that none of that dream had ever happened, he was able to revert back to his normal self. "There are a few things that I would like to come to pass." There was a hesitant nudge of bewilderment beneath his heart and he sent a bubble of mirth back to the woman in his arms. "Teal’c punching Kinsey for starters."

"That was a sight to see," Annika admitted.

The Jaffa’s face lit up with a rare smile. "Indeed, I too desire for that event to occur."

Annika giggled as she remembered another happy highlight of the premonition. "Jack, I owe you an apology."

The colonel tilted is head curiously. "You do?"

"I didn’t believe there were any fish in your lake."

Jack elbowed Sam in the ribs and then loftily waved his hand at the others. "I’ll be expecting formal apologies from the rest of you as well."

Sam batted his hand away. "Jack caught a fish in your premonition?"

"Didn’t say that," Daniel chuckled. "We can only confirm that there is one fish in Jack’s lake."

The colonel’s face fell. "Only one?"

Teal’c gave a commiserating pat to Jack’s shoulder doing his best to hide his amusement. "One is better than none, O’Neill."

"Do you think we could get dressed now?" Annika asked.

"Huh? Oh, yeah, sure," Jack clambered to his feet, still put out about the lone status of his fish. "Hammond wants us back on base ASAP." He held out a hand to help Sam up.

"You know, Jack," she locked hands with his, "it’ll be on record that a fish exists in you lake."

The colonel perked up. "Sweet!"

As the trio left to give some privacy, Annika couldn’t help but tease, "Jack, the point of the premonition is to change the outcome."

A disgruntled "Doh!" filtered back in from the hall, causing snorts of laughter from the rest of SG-1 to echo off the walls.
