Homecoming Queen

Chapter Five

"Keelah, can you hear me?" Annika crouched in front of her. The woman's eyes were open but unfocused. She didn't even blink when Annika waved a hand across her line of sight. "I think she's going into shock." She reached out to her friend to place a comforting hand to her shoulder. The second her fingers touched her a wave a pure panic and fear shot through the psychic. Annika reeled back, knocking into Daniel, unprepared for the immediate onslaught of emotion that was paralyzing her friend.

Daniel, who was still trying in vain to get some answers from the guards, automatically steadied his wife, his arms closing around her. "Are you okay?"

She couldn't answer, having to fight down the gag reflex. Her hand scrambled to her pocket for the small bottle of vanilla oil she that she carried at all times. She was trembling so much she couldn't unscrew the cap.

Daniel gently plucked the bottle from her fingers and opened it for her, tipping a few drops onto her palms. "Calm, steady breaths," he murmured, masking his surprise at the violence of her reaction to their current situation. They'd been captured before by more dangerous foe and she'd always taken it in her stride.

Annika madly rubbed the oil in. She was shaking so much her teeth chattered. "N...not...m...my...fe...fe...fear."

Blue eyes shot to Keelah, crouched at the back of the cell. The young woman was rocking back and forth, a glazed look on her face. "Damn. Is there anything you can do for her?" In the past he knew that Annika had been able to siphon off emotions, but there hadn't been a reason to try it since her abilities had been reduced.

Annika took a few controlling breaths. "I have to try." She crouched down close to Keelah, grasping her friend's hand in her own, placing her other hand flat on the stone wall behind, intending to direct the emotions into the stone. Quietly she started speaking soothing words, focusing her gift to draw away the fear and panic.

After a minute or so, Sam asked softly, "Is it working?"

The psychic gave a small shrug. Her ability to siphon was maybe a quarter of the strength it had been and took more concentration, though it wasn't draining like her telekinesis was. But even if she was at 'full strength' she doubted she'd be having more success. There were so many of the negative emotions it encompassed Keelah's aura completely. She could feel the fear pouring into herself and the stone she was touching had discolored slightly, forming an aura of fear. Yet as quickly as she was able to filter the emotion from Keelah it was replaced by more being generated from the former slave. "I'm keeping it from getting worse, but I'm not making any headway to get rid of it." She gestured with her chin to where her palm was against the stone. "I wouldn't touch that if I were you." Her gaze dropped down to Teal'c lying lifeless on the floor. "How is he?"

"His pulse is almost back to normal." Sam had rolled the Jaffa on his side, making sure his airways were clear. "I've never seen him go down so quickly before," she whispered, the worry clear on her face.

Annika didn't reply, just kept up the quiet words of comfort to Keelah. How could this be happening? This was supposed to be an easy mission, a joyous one. Did I miss something in my visions? Was I so caught up in the sentimentality that I was blinded to the reality? Squeezing Keelah's hand tighter, she thought back to the circumstances that had brought them here, going over every detail looking for some clue she had missed...

They'd been preparing the commissary for what was officially christened the 'You Can't Keep Us Down' party. Ferretti and Brooklyn were setting up the stereo equipment borrowed from Brooklyn's cousin. They'd finished a sound check and were figuring out a play list, letting the machine play on random as they debated the merits of one artist over another.

They were taking a break when one of Annika's favorite songs started up. She hooked an arm around Daniel's waist, who was leaning against the table beside her. "So am I going to get a dance out of you tonight?"

"I think I could be convinced," he replied. "But I only know two dances. The waltz and the tango."

"I'm sure I can teach you something less formal," she grinned, slipping off the table and tugging him out onto the floor.

She showed him some easy steps, however, what they wound up doing was a slow shuffle around the floor, which was fine with Annika. The 'correct' steps weren't important, she was just happy to be in Daniel's arms. Much to the disgruntlement of Jack, Ferretti was the one to announce that since everyone would be dressed to the nines, there had to be at least one dance fit for the occasion. In searching through the songs he had found a Viennese Waltz and it had taken only a few seconds for him to locate it again. That led to an impromptu practice of the quick paced waltz.

Jack reluctantly submitted to one circle around the floor, secretly not as put out as he pretended, when he caught sight of Teal'c and Keelah watching from the sidelines. "Don't think you two are going to get out of this. If I'm going to be waltzing around in a monkey suit, so are you."

Teal'c saw Keelah's eyes light up in anticipation at Jack's comment. "I do not know how, however I am willing to learn."

Having overheard the 'problem' her Jaffa friend had just raised, Annika came out of a spin, giving Daniel a playful curtsy to finish off their dance. "You should be able to pick it up pretty quickly." Teal'c, she knew, possessed the required coordination from his mastaba training, and she had seen the way Keelah had swayed to the music. From the flow of her body it was apparent to her that the former slave had had some sort of training. She grasped their hands and pulled them away from the wall.

"Keelah, you've danced before?"

She nodded. "My parents hosted many social gatherings. Dancing was expected."

"Anything like what we were just doing?"

"Similar, though the steps of my people are more...intricate."

She recruited Daniel to help demonstrate the steps. He teamed up with Keelah, while Annika went with Teal'c. After a few minutes instruction Annika and Daniel surrendered their partners for the newbies to try the dance out with each other.

Annika stood back as Ferretti started the music from the beginning again, watching the pair grow accustomed to the steps and find their rhythm. Teal'c was a little stiff in his movements. She was about to suggest that he try to relax but hesitated a moment. For some reason the formal glide of the couple was fitting given Keelah's station... She blinked. Keelah's station? Where in the world had that come from? A prickling on the back of her neck told her that it hadn't been a random thought. She fished the altered memory device from her pocket. Carrying it around had become as much a habit as the vanilla oil, for she never knew when she would need it.

Daniel wasn't the only one to raise an eyebrow when he heard the metallic twang of it activating but before anyone could question it, Annika was approaching the dancing couple. When they would have stopped, Annika shook her head. "Don't stop." Keeping step with them, she laid a hand on each of their shoulders, not sure from whom the vision was coming from.

Both were curious and though they kept up the steady one-two-three, their eyes darted above Annika's head, waiting for whatever vision was about to be downloaded. Annika tried to keep her thoughts blank so as not to corrupt the vision skirting the edges of her mind.

It took two twirls around the floor before the image started to appear. Two people shimmered into view. A man and a woman. A few seconds later, it became apparent that the vision couple were also dancing.

Keelah sucked in a sharp breath, stumbling a little when she focused on the holographic image.

Teal'c steadied her, feeling instant concern when her hand tightened in his and her eyes had the distinct sheen of tears.

"Just keep going," Annika encouraged softly.

Teal'c concentrated on leading Keelah, for the woman in his arms was no longer cognizant of what she was doing; her entire focus was on the vision. It was an unconscious act that he pulled her closer, disregarding the official stance of the waltz. He could feel her body tremble against him. He studied her captivated face, still worried about her reaction, especially when the tears rimming her eyes spilled over to trickle down her cheeks. That is, until her mouth turned upwards in a radiant smile.

He spared another glance at the vision, for the first time recognizing the similarities of the facial features of the man and woman to the flesh and blood woman in his arms.

No one spoke for fear of breaking Annika's concentration and ending the vision prematurely. Three more circles around the room and the images flickered to nothing.

"Your parents?" Teal'c asked, quietly.

She nodded. Her grip on Teal'c didn't lessen but he didn't seem to mind. "They were just as I remember."

Sam had a wistful thought of how lucky Keelah was. What she wouldn't give to have a recorded memory like that of her mom. "They look happy together."

"They were." Keelah struggled to maintain her composure, then gave up when she saw the understanding looks from her friends. "I...I hope that they still are."

Daniel had been paying attention to the clothing of the dancing couple. The gown Keelah's mother had been wearing had very detailed embroidery and he knew that quite often cultures included significant patterns of identification. "Keelah, were they wearing the national costume of your people?"

She shook her head, wiping a tear from her cheek.

"It's just that their outfits were very elaborate even for a party."

She paused before answering. "My family come from a very old bloodline. Such attire is...expected, commonplace for that circle of society."

"Your family is part of the nobility?"

"Of sorts." Slowly she nodded. "I believe that is why I was targeted by the slave traders. Noble blood fetches a higher price."

"I'll make sure this is transferred to a disc for you," Annika promised. She sensed there was a deeper meaning to Keelah's words, but she didn't feel any sort of warning or threat. She put it down to the woman being a little overwhelmed by the unexpected 'video replay'.

"Thank you." Keelah hugged the slender psychic tightly.

"I'm only the antenna." Annika returned the hug. "The memory is all yours."

Annika kept channeling the fear from her friend, taking heart that it seemed that Keelah wasn't trembling as much as she had been. She once again replayed those moments in her head. It had taken only a few minutes to transfer the vision to a permanent disc and if Keelah had watched it once, she had watched it a hundred times. Annika had been present for a few of the playbacks, but she hadn't received any more images or even feelings, other than Keelah's understandable joy at the minute long footage. All too often her gift honed in on violent episodes and dark secrets of a person that it had been refreshing to have a 'happy' vision. In hindsight she should have questioned why she had been shown that particular image at that particular time. Since working at the SGC her visions had become more refined, had a purpose rather than simple random visions. But even if she had, there was still nothing ominous that stood out. She focused on the one other vision she had had regarding this mission, desperately searching for anything she may have missed.

The latest vision had struck when Daniel had lovingly brushed his hand across her shoulder after being paged to the briefing room. It had confused her for a few minutes because at first she thought it was a case of déjà vu. She was certain she'd seen that image before. It had been of a town marketplace. The people and setting were reminiscent of medieval times. The vision had a 'new' feel to it and she assumed since she had received it from Daniel's departure, that it had something to do with SG-5's mission. The déjà vu feeling however was older. If she had to hazard a guess, she'd say she'd seen it a month or two ago, and yet bizarrely it contradictorily felt at least a decade old. She concentrated on the images, wracking her brain to solve the puzzle.

The market place was the same in both images in her mind, though from different viewpoints. The older image was fragmented and strangely enlarged...everything from the people and vendor carts to the buildings, it was like the land of the giants. She blinked. Not giants...it was from the viewpoint of a child! With that 'fact' established she tried to remember which of her past visions had involved children. She could only recall one vision from a child's point of view...

Her gaze landed on Keelah.

Annika had seen that marketplace when she had reached through the bars in the slave pen and touched the slave. It had only been a flash, almost swamped by the other segments of Keelah's life that had brought her to the auction block. A rush of excitement coursed through her and she couldn't stop the crow of delight from erupting from her throat.

Keelah jumped at the sudden whoop of joy from her friend. "What is it?"

The psychic leapt to her feet and grabbed Keelah's hand. Practically dragged her from the room. "Come on, you've got to see something!"

"See what?" Keelah had to run to keep up.

"You'll see! You'll see!" Annika slapped at the elevator button, almost bouncing on the spot in eagerness.

The redhead's exuberance was contagious even though Keelah had no idea what had caused such joy. Before she could again ask what the news was, Annika gave a huff of annoyance that the metal doors remained closed.

"Come on, monumental moment here!" she groused at the unresponsive lift. Too impatient to wait she headed for the stairwell still tugging Keelah behind her.

Keelah had little choice but to take the stairs two at a time or risked having her arm pulled from its socket.

They burst through the door on level twenty-seven.

"Out of the way!" Annika didn't pause, dodging around the few personnel in the corridor.

Their entrance into the briefing room was just as loud.

"Sorry, sir, for barging in, but we need to see the footage SG-5 shot of the planet." A little winded, Annika had to pause for breath. "Or rather Keelah needs to see it." She blinked at the now very full room, noting in surprise that Sam was also there. The blonde looked like she had good news of her own.

"What's this about?" Hammond didn't think he'd ever seen the redhead so excited. Keelah just looked bewildered at having been literally dragged in.

"A vision, sir! A double up of the best kind!" Annika was almost bursting with the news and it took extreme effort not to reveal what she had seen. She didn't want to spoil the moment for her friend. "Shakespeare, do you have your camcorder?"

The anthropologist nodded, reaching into his side pocket for the slim-line recording device.

Annika pounced on it, hit the replay and shoved it under Keelah's nose. "Look!"

"What's so import...?" Keelah's voice drifted off as she studied the screen. "Oh...ohhhh." She felt her knees go weak and she sank to the floor, clutching the camera tightly.

Hammond was concerned by the woman's reaction and automatically lurched to his feet to help her.

"It's okay, sir," Annika assured, her face beaming. She dropped down beside Keelah, peeking at the screen as well. She whispered to the stunned woman. "That is what I think it is, isn't it?"

Keelah could barely nod. Her finger almost reverently touched the screen as the image panned around to take in the whole town from afar, stopping at the landmark of the majestic castle in its center. "Home." She dragged her eyes from the screen for the briefest of seconds to look beseechingly at the returned team. "The town, is it called Fariah?"

The men nodded, bemused smiles touching their lips.

"Who...who is the King now?"

"Corfen...something. Hang on, I have it written down." Shakespeare flicked through the spiral notebook where he jotted down everything from a mission.

"Corfen'esci'que?" she asked softly, hardly daring to breathe.

"That's it!" the lieutenant exclaimed.

Instead of sitting back down, Hammond moved to the phone and dialed the control room. "Sergeant, please page General O'Neill and Teal'c to the briefing room." His gaze flicked from Daniel to Sam, then down to Annika and Keelah still sitting on the floor. A miraculous language pill, a mineral that Goa'uld were deathly afraid of and a long-lost home. Three very good reasons for a second trip to be made to P4T-536.
